Domain Name Howto

  1. How to make my domain name operational?

    1. First, you need to register your domain name here: Domain Registration. The registration is one step only.
    2. You can login to domain management area by entering your domain name or profile email address along with your password here: Domain Management.
    3. After the login, you will see a list of your domain names. Click on a certain domain name to manage.
    4. When the billing information is verified and domain name is registered Mapname.com system shows "NOW LIVE" in green. Under a 'Sub domain name', type in: www and click 'ADD' on the right side of the table. That is it. You can now access your domain name in your browser. It should show a parking page.



  2. How to activate domain name web contact form?

    1. Simply change the 'Destination' to: http://contact
    2. Under 'MAIL CONFIGURATION' add any email address that starts with the word 'web'. For example, type in: web-my-email1 on the left side of the table and type in your existing email address on the right side and click 'ADD'.
    You can use this form to receive sms messages to your cell phone, etc. It is very convenient method because your domain name now substitues your email address or your phone number.



  3. How do I point my domain name to a web link?

    Simply change the 'Destination' to your web link. For example, http://www.cnn.com/



  4. How do I activate path forwarding?

    Simply check if your destination's link has the ending '/'-sign.
    A. http://www.cnn.com/ - path forwarding is enabled.
    B. http://www.cnn.com - path forwarding is disabled.



  5. How do I activate domain masking with changing title?

    Simply click 'CONFIGURE' and check the 'Auto Fetch' -checkbox for 'TITLE'. Everything else is done automatically to ensure a better search engine indexing.



  6. How do I remove sub domains or email addresses?

    Clean the fields on the left side and on the right side of the table and click 'Save Configuration'.



  7. How do I use email forwarding?

    If you are only planning to use email forwarding you first must add at least one sub domain name as described above. It can be any sub domain name. Then, simply add emails under 'MAIL CONFIGURATION'.



  8. How do I change mail servers?

    Check under 'MAIL CONFIGURATION' if your domain name is in Forwarding or MX mode. If needed switch to MX mode, type in your mail server and click 'Save Configuration'. To switch back to Email Forwarding, click 'Email Forwarding' and save configuration. MX mode is needed if you have a mail server running or if you have a mail box for your domain name somewhere else. Do not use the IP address as your mail server, use only mail server name. Mail server name must be defined as a sub domain name above.



  9. How do I use catch-all sub domain name?

    If you are only planning to use catch-all sub domain name you first must add at least one sub domain name as described above, for example: www Then, simply add a special sub domain name denoted as *



  10. How do I use just my domain name without having to type www?

    Simply add a special sub domain name denoted as @



  11. How do I use CNAME?

    Simply type in your sub domain name and your CNAME on the right side of the table. CNAME can be relevant or absolute. If you do not use the ending dot in your CNAME it is relevant (your domain name is added). If you use the ending dot in your CNAME then your CNAME is absolute. In most cases, the CNAME you type in is absolute and must end with the dot.



  12. How do I change the domain name ownership?

    Login, click on a certain domain, click 'Transfer to another account'-link and create a new account with the new password.



  13. How can I change my public whois info that is open to all Internet?

    Please login, click on a certain domain name, click 'Public Whois'-link.



  14. How do I renew my domain name(s)?

    Simply login, click 'Renew Domains', select number of years of each domain name and proceed.



  15. How to change name servers (DNS servers) through MapName.com?

    The change of name servers (DNS servers) is needed when you switch your hosting provider. For example, you can use the following web hosting providers.
    Method 1. Login to domain management area, click on your domain name, click 'Mode' and switch to 'Direct Mode'. Then, type in your new name servers.
    Method 2. Login to domain management area, click on your domain name. If your domain name is not in advanced mode switch to advanced mode. Under NAME SERVER section, type in one of your new name servers and click 'Replicate Host Information'. Verify the changes, delete duplicate sub-domain names (if needed), and click 'Save Configuration'.
    If you need instant changes (ultra fast transfers between hosting providers) always use Method 2.

  16. Do you still offer multi-year or multi-domain discount?

    Please login to your account and click 'Wholesale Credits'-link where you can purchase multi-domain-years called credits for a discounted price. One credit is one domain name for one year. So, then, during the renewal, transfer or registration process, you can select 'wholesale credits' instead of a visa or mastercard from the drop-down box.



  17. How do I transfer my existing domain name(s) to MapName.com?

    There are two ways to do it:
    1. Hosting Transfer (your domain registration stays with your registrar and you can use our Domain Name features such as Domain Masking with Changing Mask and Title). First, purchase our services by typing in your existing domain name in our domain registration box. You are offered to add services to your existing domain name. Then, simply change nameservers to ours through your existing registrar. If you click on your domain name in our domain management area you are able to see our nameservers to change to.
    2. Registrar Transfer. Please follow our instructions described in Registrar Transfer.



  18. How do I transfer my domain name(s) away from MapName.com?

    There are two ways to do it:
    1. Hosting Transfer (your domain registration stays with MapName.com). Simply follow the instructions described in the previous question #15. For example, you can use the following web hosting providers.
    2. Registrar Transfer:
    a) First, change your public whois info as described above in the question #13. After you submit your request your public whois is changed to your profile info. Make sure your profile info is all correct. After this, your domain name is automatically unlocked and unprotected.
    b) Then, follow the same instructions described in Registrar Transfer.
    c) Transfer must be initiated through the gaining registar.
